Bullies and Borscht is a young adult historical novel which is peppered with Ukrainian phrases, food, and traditions.

This coming-of-age story follows Mary as she and her younger sisters, Julie and Lily, help their widowed immigrant mother survive and thrive through the Great Depression and World War II in Toronto. From age nine, when her beloved father dies, Mary takes on the role of protector and later provider. Julie stands up to those calling her a “dirty honky” but then, ashamed of being Ukrainian, rebels. And youngest sister, Lily, overcomes her shyness to find the strength to fight back when a drunken lodger threatens to tear the family apart.

Filled with stories of facing up to discrimination, making new friends, and even falling in love, Bullies and Borscht is a tale of love, resilience, and family.
